It is always difficult to learn that your pet has cancer. If you are reading this page due to a cancer diagnosis in your pet, we are truly sorry. One of our Veterinarians, Dr. Ahalt, and three of his sons are survivors of childhood cancer, which has made oncology an area that he is incredibly passionate about. We hate cancer. Jefferson Veterinary Hospital provides both the surgical and medical treatment of cancer. These treatments are not undertaken lightly, and the best interests of your pet is constantly considered with you throughout all stages of the process. Dr. Ahalt has had considerable experience and success in extending the life and, most importantly, the quality of life, of client's pets with both the surgical removal of cancerous growths, chemotherapy and the use of an experimental cancer vaccine.
Jefferson Veterinary Hospital offers your pet care from veterinarians who are passionate about treating cancer, have decades of experience and stay on top of cutting edge developments in treatment, along with advanced, in-house, diagnostic imagining with a state of the art 3D CT scanner. The CT scanner allows our veterinarians to develop the best plan for any required surgery. For example, it allows our veterinarians to evaluate the depth of any tumor and enables them to plan the best course of treatment for your pet, whether that be chemotherapy, surgical, radiation or palliative care. If surgery is recommended, in most cases, this can occur immediately following the CT scan to help minimize the number of times the patient has to undergo anesthesia.
Our veterinarians are seeing success in both the extension and quality of life of dogs with operable cancer tumors using an experimental “cancer vaccine”, known as K9-ACV (Canine Autologus Cancer Vaccine). The cancer vaccine takes the therapeutic approach of immunotheraphy and is created personally for your pet and incorporated into their cancer treatment plan. The cancer vaccine is a three dose vaccine that is administered by one of our veterinarians every 30 days.
